Confirm the playback request
Identify the camera, date and time required. Compare the recorder clock with the expected time, check whether one channel or all channels are affected and look for recordings from other days. Footage available on the recorder but missing from a mobile app is a different symptom from footage missing on the recorder itself.
Check the intended recording mode
Continuous and event-based recording have different settings. The schedule must match the required channels and periods, and event configuration must support the intended recording operation for that model. Live viewing may continue even when the recording schedule does not cover the period being searched.
Document storage status first
Record the exact disk-status message and whether the recorder detects the storage device. Do not format, delete or reset the system as an initial experiment if earlier footage is needed. Discuss required evidence and the effects of any proposed operation with the owner before proceeding.
Retention and verification
Retention depends on recording settings, data rate, camera count and operating periods, not disk size alone. Older footage may be outside the actual retention window. Recovery cannot be promised without investigation. After a repair, verify that new footage is created and can be played back for the required channels, rather than checking only the live picture.
